“Street kids are extraordinary than common children”

“Street kids are extraordinary than common children”

Living in the streets needs courage and strength. Children in the streets live more or less without support from grown-ups. They live on their own and take care of their needs by themselves. Well, this is not everyone’s cup of tea. Only children who have the endurance and learn street-smart skills fast can do so. Out of 1.6 million children out in the streets of Nepal, only 5000 live in the streets.

The society around us tends to think that street children’s dependency on drugs and abnormal lifestyle is contagious to other children in the community but that is not the whole truth. In a way, we as a society miss the fact that these are children who are rebelling against domestic abuse and seek freedom to be by themselves. These children seem to miss their families immensely but for one reason or another cannot go back home. They ended being on the streets because they were misguided in the first place. They want someone to be there for them, to listen to them and understand their story.

“ Many people and organizations have a misbelief that what they are looking for is food, clothes, and education. But in reality, what they need the most is people who can respect them and listen to them. They want to be treated normally like any other person. They desire and crave to be understood.”

This is the view portrayed by Mr. Krishna Thapa, Director, Voice of Children. Voice of Children (VOC) is an organization working with children living/working in the streets, by rehabilitation and reintegrate back to their families & communities. VOC has an acute focus on improving their life skills & capacity for their self-sustainability and independence.
